Blinds - Small Blind, Big Blind

Posted on | September 2, 2008 |

Reason for Poker Blinds
In order to make sure there is some action on the pot in each hand in Texas Hold’em there is an initial bet into the pot before any playing cards have been dealt by the small blind and the big blind.

Table Position of the Blinds:
The two players to the left of the dealer are called the blinds; the player to the immediate left of the dealer is the small blind, and the player to the left of the small blind is called the big blind.

The value of the blinds will differ depending on poker table you are playing at. Generally the big blind is the minimum bet, and the value of the small blind is half of the big blind. The table maximum buyin is usually 100 big blinds.

In Texas hold’m, the blinds arguably have the worst position. They post their blinds regardless of what hole cards they are dealt.

Furthermore they are the first people to bet once the flop has been dealt. This means they have no information or clues about the strength of the hands of the other players in the pot.

Completing the Small Blind
You may ‘Complete the small blind’ when you are the small blind and you would like to see the flop, and no one has raised the stakes above the value of the big blind. You may then see the flop provided the Big blind does not raise. This is a common time for the big blind to attempt a blind steal.

Advantage of the Big Blind
The big blind is in an interesting position of being able to change the betting strategy because he must be in the hand, at least for the first round of betting assuming the other players, have not made any bets/raises.
The big blind may limp a monster hand in, pretending to be in a weak position, and to encourage more interest in the pot from other players (making them think they have a chance of taking the pot down with relatively weak hands). This strategy is called Slow Playing.
